Meet the Founder & CEO, Marlena M.D. Kelley

Marlena M.D. Kelley

Hi, my name is Marlena M.D. Kelley, the “Entrepreneur with SWAGGER,” and host of the popular podcast, It’s All About SWAGGER. I’m on a mission to build generational wealth through entrepreneurship and I want to empower you to do the same.

In the Beginning…

When you grow up poor, you dream a lot, and boy was I a dreamer. I always wanted to be a wealthy, corporate tycoon. As a child, I would see myself sitting in the train station with all those other corporate tycoons, legs crossed, reading the Wall Street Journal, getting ready to go to New York City to run my multi-million dollar conglomerate. As long as I can remember, I wanted to be financially independent and run my own business. As a very poor kid, I was always angry and afraid. I was ashamed of being poor and I felt trapped. I’m telling you, I just knew deep down in my soul that having my own company was my ticket to wealth and freedom.

From Corporate America – 1st Taste of Entrepreneurship

Now let me fast forward. After graduating from Clark University in Worcester, MA, armed with my dual degree in Business Management and International Development, I moved to Maryland and started my career in public relations and marketing. While working with several non-profit agencies: one serving the homeless in Baltimore and the other our national parks, I started my first business. It was an absolute disaster. I thought I just needed to be “good” at what I was doing and the money would fly in.  Well, I was wrong and that was not to be the case.

Soon after closing the doors on my failed business, I started in sales knocking door-to-door selling encyclopedias. You talk about an education in sales. I had the absolute best time of my life traveling across the country selling encyclopedias door-to-door. Let me just say, “I loved the money I was making and the great people I met on the road.” I learned how to give presentations and immediately close the sale. It was here where I received my first dose of personal development. The owner of the company gave me a little book called Think & Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. This book changed my life and I’ve been hooked on personal development ever since.

Beginning my Journey as a Full-Time Entrepreneur

After 15 years of managing teams for some of the largest facilities management companies in the country doing sales, marketing, training, and developing systems, I also managed to successfully launch two more of my own businesses. In August 2008, with a nudge and a blessing from God, I left my good government job at the U.S. Senate to pursue my dream of personal and financial freedom via entrepreneurship and to help others do the same. I absolutely love working with vision-driven entrepreneurs, for I believe that everyone is born with a purpose, with their very own unique gifts and talents.
